Filaments in the Galaxy: Physical properties and their role in the game

Eugenio Schisano (INAF-IFSI)

Filaments appear to be the dominant structures in star-forming regions. To improve our knowledge of the star formation process one needs to understand how such structures form and evolve. We developed a new method to detect filaments and extract their physical properties based on the second derivative of column density maps. I will discuss the results of this method when applied to star-forming regions observed with the Herschel Space Observatory.
