Star Formation at Low Metallicity
How does metallicity affect the star formation process? This question is relevant to the Milky Way which has a known metallicity gradient. However insight on this question may come from studies of nearby low metallicity galaxies, e.g. the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) among others. This talk will cover briefly the theoretical expectations for the effects of low metallicity on the star formation process, and more extensively cover observational results on nearby low metallicity galaxies on the global and detailed scales. Results from Herschel will be emphasized.
